i would be gratefull if anyone could help me to work out what the wife's maiden surname was any suggestions would be appreciated

Could well be as the IGI has:

JOHN CHAMBERS
MARGARET LINDSAY
Marriage: 13 JUL 1860 Blythswood, Glasgow, Lanark, Scotland
Messages: Extracted marriage record for locality listed in the record.

I was thinking along the lines of 'Tw....' but couldn't find any surnames that fitted the bill

John was a widower when he died..

There is a Margaret Chalmers Lindsay died in Anderston 1867 aged 26... worth a look?

although recorded as Chambers instead of Chalmers the details for the mother's maiden name match (Dryburgh) and the occupation of the John's father as a bottle maker .X marks the spot of both John & Margaret

i have followed your suggestion and had a look at the death of Margaret Chalmers Lindsay in 1867 Anderston details for John match as does fathers name no occupation given only mothers surname is different but that could be a possible re-marriage as it dosen't give ms.

now to hunt for some possible children
