Squiggly Writing Interpreter Sought....

Post by Tusker » Tue Mar 07, 2006 3:13 pm

I've posted an image of the 1866 marriage certificate of John Kelly and Catherine O'Ryelly. Can I have some help please, in deciphering the following words:

"On the (Tenth\Fourth?) day of September (...................?) Edinburgh.

Here's the link......and thanks!

Hi Tusker, i'd go for,

Fourth day of September (only because the "F" in father's occupation looks similar, and the "T" in Thomas the witness looks different)

next bit is also a guess,

at the ?? Blair Street, Edinburgh.

Jack
ps, was there ever a R.C. Church in Blair Street?

Hi Tusker
Can't add to what has already suggested.....
But look at the name of the officiating minister.... Do you see it as "Edward J Hannan" :-k

Edward Hannan was the Catholic priest who came to Edinburgh in 1861 and founded Hibernian FC (the Hi-bees) in the mid 1870's.

Sorry it doesn't help decipher the document... but it adds a bit of colour to the story.

Just to muddy the water

The IGI has:

JOHN KELLY Male
Marriages:
Spouse: CATHERINE O'RYELLY
Marriage: 10 SEP 1866 Edinburgh Parish, Edinburgh, Midlothian, Scotland
Extracted marriage record

I did check some old maps of Edinburgh, no sign of any RC churches there - there was a Tron Church, Merchants Hall, Goldsmiths hall and a bank or 3 but nothing else of note.

Wilma -- Maybe they had to get married TWICE because the first ceremony was interrupted when the priest had to rush away to organise a fitba' game? :?

JimM -- Wait a minute!!!......I don't suppose there was a John Kelly who captained Hibs in the 1860's, then went on to play for Ireland many times, before signing for Real Madrid and then Inter Milan, and taking them both on to glory as European Cup champions on numerous occasions, and left his vast fortune, which has been accumulating interest at a phenomenal rate, to his great-nephew ......You don't mean THAT John Kelly, do you? :)

The other reason that the TENTH seems more correct is:

The marriage was registered on the 12th as was the one below and that was performed on the 11th.

I don't see the marriage lines lying about fora week befor getting to the registrars [ was it legally to be lodged with a certain time? I think there is a time limit at present]

Wilma -- Based on the interpretation of part of the squiggly writing being "Blair St", I found Blair St on the attached link below. It's right next to the Tron Church -- and John and Cath lived at 36 High St when their first child was born in 1867. So if the Tron Church is or was an RC church at that time, I think we have a "hit".....Thanks! (I'll have to look at the marriage certificate again to see if the other indecipherable part might be "Tron Church.")

Can anyone read the witnesses names? The 2nd one appears to be Mary Jane Johnstone, but whose name is above hers? Any guesses? Thanks...
