Still Missing My MCKINNONs.....

Post by scotincanada » Wed Mar 15, 2006 2:38 am

Hello good people,

I'm back to quiz you again regarding my well hidden MCKINNONs!

It seems that they were likely "cleared" from their homes more than once in the early to mid 1800s. Archibald MCKINNON (b. abt. 1810) married Catherine MCARTHUR (b. abt. 1813) on April 26, 1831, I believe in the parish of Kilninian, Argyllshire. Both the MCKINNON & MCARTHUR families had come to the settlement of Burg after being cleared from another locality (in which they had been neighbours). Archibald & Catherine had the following children (that we know of) at Burg:
Catherine b. 1839 (later married James MCDOUGALL in 1866)
Donald b. 1843
Neil b. 1847 (later married Ann PATERSON abt. 1884)
Ann b. abt. 1849 (may have married a WHITE?)
The couple, along with 1st child Catherine, are found at Burg in 1841. But in 1851, they are all gone except Donald who is living with MCARTHUR relatives. Where did the rest go?
If marriage regs. are a reliable source, then Archibald & Catherine MCKINNON were still living in 1866, when their daughter, Catherine married. But again ... where?
I've been all over SP trying to find them on any census, or a death for either Archibald or Catherine, but nothing turns up. They must have been SOMEWHERE. We know they didn't die prematurely nor immigrate.
My great grandfather, their 2nd son, Neil MCKINNON (1847 - 1931) spoke no English & couldn't read or write 1 word, which leads us to believe the MCKINNONs were some place very remote. I suppose there are 100 tiny islands where they might have been (Archibald was a shepherd) but surely they would have eventually turned up on some record? This search has been going on for years & can get quite frustrating. :x Thanks very much in advance for any missing puzzle pieces you might have!

Hello Mary,

According to the birth of their daughter Margaret the family were living at Iona for the 1851 census.

Maybe I'm getting this wrong but according to the IGI they had the following children:

MCKINNON

Post by scotincanada » Wed Mar 15, 2006 2:21 pm

Hi everybody,

Thank you very, very much for your quick replies & your efforts on my behalf. Unfortunately, this is not them. This particular family has been suggested to me a few times before. The parents do fit quite neatly but the children's names are all off & their births should all be in Burg at Kilninian, not Iona. We do know that they were at Burg in 1839 (birth of Catherine MCKINNON) & in 1841 (census) & still in 1847 (birth of Catherine's brother, Neil MCKINNON) but gone by 1851 (not on census). In fact, the parents of these children, Archibald MCKINNON & Catherine MCARTHUR, were missing from 1847 for the duration of their lives. The children turn up later (1860s - 1880s) in marriages, so we know they survived & did not immigrate.

A puzzle indeed! Your help is much appreciated.

Hello Mary,

The reason I suggested this Archibald McKinnon and Catherine McArthur is they were married on the date you gave above.

ARCHIBALD MCKINNON
Male
Marriages:
Spouse: CATHRINE MCARTHUR
Marriage: 26 APR 1831 Iona, Argyll, Scotland

ARCHIBALD MC KINNON
Male
Marriages:
Spouse: CATHRINE MC ARTHUR Family
Marriage: 26 APR 1831 Kilfinichen And Kilvickeon, Argyll, Scotland

Where did you find the info they were married at Kilninian?

And how do you know they were Neil's parents?

MCKINNON

Post by scotincanada » Wed Mar 15, 2006 4:37 pm

Hi there,

Oops! I'm not sure now where I got that marriage date, but in thinking of it now, I must have either received it from one of those folks who had previously suggested that the Iona family was mine, or possibly I got it from familysearch.org, thinking it was my folks & thereby falling into the same Iona trap. I am sorry to have mislead you in this way - entirely my fault.

As for how I'm sure of who my gggrandparents were, their names are listed on the marriage regs. for their children, Neil, Donald & Catherine MCKINNON. Older cousins of my father, who knew ggrandfather, Neil MCKINNON (1847 - 1931), knew that he was born at Burg, as were his siblings - he said so himself. Unfortunately, no one seems to have asked him where he spent his childhood though. It wasn't at Burg.

I must be missing something. Maybe their family name was incorrectly transcribed - but on every census? And what of their deaths?

Thanks so much again. I'm terribly sorry about that marriage date mistake.

Hello again Mary,

So were the parents of Neil, Catherine and Donald also Archibald McKinnon and Catherine McArthur?
Here are Donald and Catherine in 1881 but I'm sure you will have this.
