More Dechiphering Help.....

Post by Pandabean » Thu Mar 16, 2006 1:55 pm

Can anyone help me make out the details on this certificate.

http://www.talkingscot.com/gallery/disp ... p?pos=-449

It is the marriage of William Ross and Mary Robb. I cannot make out the name of the mother, profession of the father for Wm Ross. As for the Robb's I cannot make out the Mother's last name (Bell?) or the fathers profession.

Any help would be great. :)

Thanks

Hi Pandabean,

My interpretations are:

William Ross, joiner journeyman (deceased)
____ Ross m.s. Stevenson

Andrew Robb, platelayer (deceased)
Mary Robb m.s. Hill

All the best,

Andrew Paterson

Hi Pandabean

I can see:

On the twenty eighth of June
at George Street Falkirk
after Banns according to the forms
of the Church of Scotland

William Ross iron moulder bachelor 29 Lint Riggs Falkirk

Father: William Ross Joiner [ journeyman] deceased
Mother: Ann Ross MS Thomson

Mary Robb Domestic Servant spinster 24 Cow Wynd Falkirk

Father: Andrew Robb ?? layer [ deceased] [ could be Platelayer or slatelayer]
Mother : Mary Robb MS Hill

A Ross Taylor
Witnesses
Robert Marshall [or Marzall]
and Elizabeth Robb

The IGI has an Andrew Robb marrying a Mary Hill in Nov Dec 1860

Cow Wynd and Lint Riggs are both streets in the centre of town George street is just a little outside [ beyond the railway line] but that's slightly 'posher' houses perhaps where the minister or whoever married them lived.

Joiner Journeyman?

Just did an 1881 census check on the Robb's and found the Mother (Mary Hill) was a lunatic? What would this mean?

A journey man was one who had served his apprenticeship and was 'qualified' in his trade.

Lunatic has changed it's meaning over the years - some sort of mental illness.
