Hi folks,
I've had a lot of luck using SP's wills and testaments. It has helped me establish relationships and exposed relatives I hadn't relaished existed. I always thought that the year of availability would move along as it does for BMD but we seem to be stuck at 1901. Any idea why? Can I access them anywhere else? Online?!

Lesley's correct about anything beyond the 1901 limit........
From a recent chat with someone at NAS I can state that there are no immediate plans to extend the database beyond 1901. In fact, such a task has a fairly low priority given the other NAS projects, particularly the digitisation and indexing of the CH2 and CH3 kirk session records, and, beyond that some sasines, never mind completing the on-line, searchable NAS catalogue, involving many aspects, but including the convertion of the existing card index of the High Court of Justiciary records to a computer format (criminals, but it only includes, I'm afraid, the names of the "panel" = the accused), plus the same for the FAIs and one or two other goodies of great interest to genealogists.
NAS differ from GROS in that they have limited finance or the chance to raise or generate external finance, and have to rely on their in-house resources plus volunteer resources from organisations such as SCAN, LDS/GSU, etc., - the digitisation of the testamentary papers up to 1901, and the near complete digitisation of the sessional records, - was/is being carried out by teams of retired LDS couples on 6 month (I think it's 6 months) stints from the US.
Another difference is that the fundamental NAS ethos is that access to NAS records is free to all, - those who walk through the front door at least, - hence the free, fully searchable testaments database, and that it's only copies that they charge for. In other words it would never be possible for NAS to set up a project equivalent to DIGROS/ScotlandsPeople on the basis of the cost being recovered from users.

PS The indexing of the sessional records is going to be a long and complex project. The first step is going to be a pilot project in one area to see just how these records could and should be indexed. I'd be pleasantly surprised if the indexes and associated images start to come on line before 2008...........
The sole consolation that I can offer is that this digitisation project will be complete within a couple of months, so that all of the images can be viewd on terminals at Register House, except, of course, for around 12 kirk sessions, including Brechin Cathedral, - I went in to view them just recently, - which have been retained by the kirk sessions involved. The deal is that if they ever want to deposit their records anywhere else, they must first offer them to NAS.

PPS Once the NAS catalogue is complete there will be the same facility as on the TNA catalogue, i.e. find a record of possible interest and you can ask for by email for an estimate of the costs of photocopies............ and then order the same if of interest.
