Hi
I'm struggling massively with tracing my husband's g-grandfather's parents. He is I think this birth (3rd one down the list; Andrew Kennedy Steel):
http://www.talkingscot.com/gallery/disp ... m=61&pos=0
which is clearly illegitimate. What I can't work out is whether his mother Mary Steel has some other name listed in column 5, since I can't make out the writing at all. She later changes her name to Glen (although I can find no marriage in England or Scotland); when she dies (just one year later) her maiden name is listed as Steel. Anyone able to help?
TIA
Chris
Yet more deciphering help...Please.....

Hi Chris
and a warm welcome to Talking Scot.
You are correct in saying it is not clear to read - it almost looks like
Mary Steel
Henderson?? Not sure...& I may be way off...
and the next word may be her occupation but I'm not sure what it says.
In the following column, it looks like
Mary Steel,
Mother
present.
I'm sure someone else will be able to do bettter with it!
Best wishes
Lesley

Thanks very much for this, all of you. Yes, this poor Mary seems to have had a miserable life, dying just over a year after her child Andrew was born;
http://www.talkingscot.com/gallery/disp ... m=61&pos=1
leaving him an orphan (7th down), who also took the name Glen:
http://www.talkingscot.com/gallery/disp ... p?pos=-478.
This boy later joined the navy, and named his father as 'Andrew Glen' on the occasion of his two marriages, despite any evidence for that fact!
Although I'#m fairly new to family tracing, I've managed to get quite a long way back on my own family, right to 1740 in one branch. My husband's relatives are proving more frustrating, however....
Thanks again
Chris

Hi Chris
It is rather sad isn't it?
At first I figured she was pointing the finger at the real father by using the name Andrew Kennedy Steel. But now you have to really wonder if she found it easier to get along by telling everyone she was a widow and by her taking on the surname of Andrew's dad. Maybe they even lived together for a bit? But the circumstances of her death with no parents named and a non related informant really do end this line rather suddenly.....
Best wishes in your other searches!

Re Mary Steel & son Andrew
Hi Chris,
I hope you don't mind me asking these questions.
What age was Mary STEEL when she died? Address & when? Informant?
And what occupation did her son Andrew GLEN give for his father on his 2 marriages?
