I've located 3 possible birth reg 1901-1905 and the codes all begin with 646/02 (Govan).
In Scotlandspeople's index of Old RD and Today's RD have a variety of time frames and years. In the census of 1901 the code begins with 644/12 for the area of Govan which I need.
Am I reading the index correctly, when I determine that no change has been made to the code for that 1901-1905 time frame?
Also, most of the index gives only a 3 digit RD number, but some are followed by and additional 1 or 2 digit number i.e.: 644 14 or 601 3.
What is the significance of the second number?
Thanks,
Frances

Hi Frances,
The second group of digits is used when there are sub-districts, or where a new distict is fitted in between existing districts and is given a letter suffix.
RD 644/1 becomes 644/01 (sub-district 1 of Glasgow 644)
RD 644/12 remains 644/12 (sub-district 12 of Glasgow 644)
RD 698/A becomes 698/A0 (was originally 698)
RD 698/B becomes 698/B0 (newer district fitted in between 698 and 699)
Unless you are looking for post 1972 information (not on SP for many years to come) then ignore the current RDs. The whole lot were re-numbered in 1972, and many have changed since as registration offices have become more centralised.
The Glasgow 644 registration districts are given on the following webpage.
http://www.talkingscot.com/rds/city-rds-glas.htm
644/12 was Gorbals from 1875 to 1906. Gorbals pre-1875 may have been part of one of the Govan RDs. I don't know.
The 646 RDs were as follows:
1855-1869
646/1 - Govan
646/2 - Partick
1870-1874
646/1 - Govan Church
646/2 - Park
646/3 - Partick
1875-1881
646/1 - Govan Church
646/2 - Partick
1882-1906
646/1 - Plantation
646/2 - Govan
646/3 - Partick
My belief is that the RDs used for the post-1855 censuses were the same as those used for registrations at that time.
All the best,
AndrewP
