Another hard to read certificate.....

Post by ninatoo » Sat Apr 22, 2006 1:34 pm

Hi all,

I have uploaded a certificate in the gallery for the marriage of Rachel McCraken and Joseph Hackney. I am finding most of it quite difficult to read and would appreciate some help!

Hi Nina and Andrew

I agree.....

And it looks like we won't find out what a Best Boy is unless you venture south of the border....

Hi Nina

I wondered if his address was Leith Toll south. If you look at the flourish where he has writen 'Twenty' it looks the same. Leith was in two clear parts North & South

The ninister was David Smart
Surname appears to have been spelt McCraken. The rest I agree with

Could it be Episcopal rather than Established; and Asphalter rather than Upholster?

Hi Nina,

Here is my revised interpretation of the marriage certificate after reading Russell's and Jill's replies above.
  • 1879, on the twenty fifth day of July at No.11 Greenside Row, Edinburgh
After publication according to the forms of the
    Episcopal Church in Scotland

signed Joseph Hackney, Sergeant Royal Artillery, bachelor, 27
    Leith ___ (Fort?
    or Toll?), Leith

signed Rachael McCraken, Dressmaker, Spinster, 18
    No.11 Greenside Row, Edinburgh

    Seth Hackney, _____ (Best Boy?)
    Mary Hackney, MS. Shaw

    John McCraken,
    Asphalter
    Mary McCraken, MS. McEwan

    signed David
Smart, Curate in charge of St Pauls Church(?), Edinburgh
    signed Frank D Blogg witness
    signed Lizzie McCraken witness

    1879 July 20th at Edinburgh
    Alex _____, Registrar
Curate makes more sense in connection with the Episcopal Church rather than the Church of Scotland.

All the best,

Defintutely

Episcopal Church in Scotland.

Asphalter.

Probably "Fort".

Probably St. Pauls E. C.

.....and how about "Post Boy" ??............ (such a person didn't have to be a "boy")

Seth Hackney

I thought his occupation might be Rat Boy.

The only Seth Hackney I can see on the 1881 census is a Drayman. :?

Could it be Leith Port?
Also, I'm not sure Best boy is applicable, since it refers to a senior assistant of an electrician, the timing is a little premature for that trade as well as the maturity of Seth.
I was wondering if it is Boot Boy. Having said that I have a trouble with the letter before boy, in that it doesn't look like any other letter "t" in the document which all have a forward stroke after the letter.

Also for Seth Hackney, there is only one in all of Britain mentioned in the 1881 so I am supposing this the correct one.

What better place for an artilleryman?

Leith
Leith (68), chief seaport in E. of Scotland, on the Forth, contiguous to Edinburgh and the port of it; is an old, unattractive, but busy town. The harbour comprises five docks. The imports are corn, flour, wines, sugar, and fruit; the exports, coal, iron, paraffin, and whisky. There are shipbuilding and engineering works, breweries, distilleries, and other industries. Leith Fort, between the town and Newhaven, is the head-quarters of the artillery for Scotland.
