Hi Sam
And welcome to Talking Scot :D
Margaret Erskine nee Barclay death 1858 Cupar aged 53
You can find the death on the Scotlands People site:
http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/
It is a pay per view site, and you will be able to see the original death entry there which should give you Margaret's age at death, her place of death, the cause of death and her parents' names. She is not hard to find because for women you can search by both surnames - there is only one, died Cupar, Fife, 1858 as you mentioned.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Sam,

Go to the SOURCES at top of page and click on the IGI site.
There is an entry for them there, also do a parent check and it will bring up their Children.

Cheers,
Maureen

Hi Sam

Yup you're right too bad the marriage was before 1855...but that doesn't matter as long as they died after 1855 and there was a reliable informant for the DC. In your case when you purchase the DC of Margaret you will learn her parents names and also whether her husband Peter was still living. If he was then you know you have a good chance of tracking him forward through census records etc to his own death and quite likely the naming of his parents.

Best wishes
Jean

Margaret's death register entry does indeed show the names of her parents.

Peter's death register entry doesn't, as well as being an extremely difficult entry to find, but there's another way that leads to the names of his parents ..........

What is the other way to find his parents. I will try and get Margarets death certificate when i get some money to put on my card.

How do you locate people before 1855 and know parents. especially if they married before 1855. What happens if they die before 1855 then i suppose your stuffed. this is where i am coming lost with the change over period.

It certainly becomes more difficult. If they died after 1855 then you are in with a good chance of their parents being on the death entry. If they died before 1855 then sometimes a bit more digging about is required e.g. they may have had brothers or sisters who survived until after 1855 and then their deaths will give you the parents' names you need. Even if they died before 1855 they may have left a will... and there is always the 1851 and the 1841 census to take you a little way further back too - if you can find the person you are looking for living with their parents.

Best wishes
