Birth Registration.....

Post by Bertha » Sat May 20, 2006 6:03 pm

In the 1880's, when registering the birth of her children without the father present what proof did a mother have to give re naming the childs father?
I have an ancestor who's second wife registered her children giving date of marriage yet I can find no trace of this marriage on SP or at NRH.
Any guidance would be much appreciated
Regards

Hi Bertha:

You may be interested in "Irregular" Marriages in Scotland posted to this site by DavidWW, which will give you one situation that may apply.

Go to the blue search bar above and when the search page comes up, enter "Irregular" Marriages in Scotland in the subject field and you will find his post.

Hope this is of help,

Hi Frances
Thanks for the reply, have read Davids very informative report.
Funny thing is, I had thought I had found this marriage on one of my earlier visits to NRH under the wife's name but I must have been dreaming it!
I'm pretty sure now it was an irregular marriage of some sort, as on one of her children's birth certificates, the date is very close to when the first wife (my 2 x gr gran) died, on the next its given as a year later. She helped my 2x gr grandad raise his children,(I think there were 3) had at least 3 more with him, then when widowed 10 yrs later married again and had a few more. The children eventually all went their different ways but thanks to Talking Scot & Genes Reunited, I am now intouch with her gr gr granddaughter in Australia as well as a gr gr grandaughter from her husbands first marriage, a direct connection to my line.
Again thanks for taking the time.
