R.C.E ?.....

Post by Tracey » Sat May 20, 2006 9:14 pm

My grandfathers birth name was different to the one we all knew him as. He was born in 1904 illigitimate but by the time he was at school his name had been changed. The birth entry on SP doesnt have an R.C.E and i was wondering if there could be one and how long after the birth register would one be attached to the entry ?

Hope this makes sence :?

Hi Tracey

I don't think there would be a time bar on RCE entries. They often relate to enquiries by the Procurator Fiscal but can result from Sherrif Court judgements or the earlier Commisariot Courts.
Entries may be made to formalise a decision about the date, time and place of a death.
They may relate to a divorce which has been granted by the Court - In my wife's family the entry relating to a divorce in 1855.
I have an Old Parish Register entry correcting a date of birth in 1837 with the court approval for the correction made in 1876. (The entry had been written in the page for 1827)
RCE entries relating to births were usually to enable the person to make a claim or receive benefits left them in a will. Basically it was a formal identification method.
As far as I know you can call yourself what you like and its only when there is a need to prove your identity that some form of formal change needs to be made.
Hope this clarifies a little.

Hi Tracey,

The majority of RCEs on birth certificate are within a year of the certificate being issued, but there are some furthger on, even 40 ot 50+ years further on. In all cases that I know of, these have been RCE-marked on the original certificate.

All the best,

Thanks Andrew

I suppose like many i am trying to find out why my sir name is what it is and wondered, also, as Russell sugested that at some point ie marrying or joining the army he would have to prove his identity and if so what with.

Hi Tracey

Regardless of the length of time between the original record and the date of a possible RCE (unless it were just in the last few months!) then the image on ScotlandsPeople would show that there had been an RCE........

That in the context that there is no limit on the time period between the date of the original record and the date of a possible RCE ............

So......... in your case, if there is no such RCE annotation then that's not a route that is going to help you.............

Hi Tracey,

Just to say that like you my grandfather was also born illegitimate, in 1900, and by the time he went to school his name had also been changed.

His BC doesn't have an R.C.E., but funnily enough his sisters does. I often wondered though how he managed in situations where he had to prove his identity.
