Help deciphering again............please.....

Post by garibaldired » Fri May 26, 2006 6:05 pm

Hi

I've uploaded the marriage certificate of Alexandrina Dobbie to James N Gray to the gallery.
I'm really stuck with it! Any help would be much appreciated.
I can't work out much and definitely not their occupations.
Am I right to think her parents John Dobbie and ? were not married?

Thanks in advance.
Meg

Hi Meg
The quality of the image is such that I'm sure if you filled in a contact form, SP would send you a clearer copy.

Looks to me like:
25th? of April at Lothian? Bridge, after banns according to the terms of the Church of Scotland.
He is a papermaker
She is a worker in a Paper Mill
(hmm - I wonder where they met? )
His Parents look like William Gray, fireman and Isabella Wilson
Hers look like John Dobbie, miner? and Sarah Trongate? From the wording it looks like they were not married.

Best wishes
Lesley

Hi Meg,

Here is my first stab at this difficult to read certificate.

  • 1865 Twentyninth April at Lothian Bridge
After Banns According to the Forms of the Church of Scotland

    Signed
James N. Gray, Papermaker, Bachelor, 22
    Lothian Bridge, Newbattle

    Signed
Alexandrina Dobbie, Worker at Paper Mill, Spinster, 18
    Lothian Bridge, Newbattle

    William Gray, Fireman
    and
    Isabella Gray, MS. Wilson

    John Dobbie, Miner
    and
    Sarah Scougall

    Signed
    Thomas Gordon, Minister of Newbattle

    John Reid, Witness
    Sarah Naismith, Witness

    1865 First May at Newbattle
    David _____, Regsistrar

The implication is that her parents were not married.

All the best,

AndrewP
