Biagamous marriages.....

Post by Andrew » Sat Mar 19, 2005 3:33 pm

Hi

I have found two examples of bigamy. The marriage certificates have been stamped "Bigamy" in the left hand margins.

Does anyone know how I can find out if there are any accessible records of the consequences of these events?

Many thanks

Andrew

Hi Andrew

Bigamy being what it is (a crowd puller and newspaper seller) then the case would almost certainly have made the papers.

I presume Frederick was found out some months before the 1919 date? The case would almost certainly be in the Edinburgh papers-The Scotsman
www.thescotsman.com, for example-as I believe the case would be tried at the High Court in Endinburgh.

So there should be newspapers and court records to look for. With a bit of luck, the entire story should be readily available.

Hi Marilyn

You were correct in assuming the Scotsman would have a report. Many thanks. In fact I found another reference to my family, my grandfather was jailed for sedition in 1921!

best wishes
