My Great Great Grandfather WILLIAM KELLY/KELLEY born c 1831 in Ireland married Sarah Burns 1858 in Coatbridge died 9th November 1882. His death certificate states that he "accidentyly drowned in the canal basin Calderbank".
Does anyone know if there any records that I could look at to find out more about his death ?.
Would also be pleased to hear from anyone researching the Kelly/Kelley family in Coatbridge.
Thank you
Frances

Here is an account from the Scotsman 10 November 1882:
Coatbridge – Body Found in the Monkland Canal
Yesterday the body of a man named Wm. Kelly, 56 years of age, and who resided in Airdrie, was found in the basin if the Monkland Canal at Calder Iron Works near Coatbridge. From information received, it would appear that the deceased commenced his usual employment in the Calder Iron Works at the usual time. Some time afterwards he was missed, and an unsuccessful search was made for him through the works and at his home in Airdrie. . In the forenoon a bonnet which was identified as that of the deceased was observed floating in the basin. This led to a search being made when the body was recovered, as stated above.
I think that probably poses as many questions as it answers!

Hi Tom
That was quick
Thank you very much for the reply. As you say it probably poses more questions than answers-something I have found out happens more often than not.
Knew that I could rely on someone getting back to me .
Thanks again
