Hi all,
Extract from IGI.
Janet HILL born 24th May 1835 in Liff, Dundee – f James HILL m Grace WILKIE.
From SP
Jess HILL married Peter SPENCE 14th February 1855 – f James HILL m Grace WILKIE
From SP
Jessie HILL (previously SPENCE) married Andrew SPEED 25th February 1869 – f James HILL deceased m Grace MORAN ???? deceased
From SP
Jessie SPEED died November 1927 f James HILL m Grace MORAN
I’ve tried all sorts of combinations for a marriage of Jessie’s parents but no luck.
I’ve also checked deaths of James HILL in Dundee between 1855 and 1869 but neither of the two I found appear to be him.
Fresh ideas welcome.

The possibility I will put forward is that Janet Hill was born in 1835 to James Hill and Grace Hill (ms. Wilkie). Some time later, presumably between 1855 and 1869 James Hill had died and Grace re-married to a man of surname Moran. I can find nothing in the IGI to support this idea, but it is my suggestion to offer you.
All the best,
Andrew Paterson

Hi
I don't know if this confuses matters more but I had a similar situation but found that the mother had been married three times.
The middle marriage only lasted about a year and fell between census years and no children born from that marriage.
I happened on the marriage by chance and checked for the deaths of her husbands, then found her third marriage using her second surname.
That sounds confusing but its another option to try.

WILKIE Margaret F 45 Outside Census County (1841)
WILKIE Grace F 20 Linen Hand Loom Weaver Outside Census County (1841)
WILKIE Jessie F 7 Angus
I feel this has to be my Jessie who was living in Watsons Lane when she married for the first time in 1855. Haven't figured out relationships (apart from Grace being her mother).
Try as I may though I cannot find a death for Grace Wilkie on SP. I've searched from 1855 - 1869. with no luck. According to Jess/ie's first marriage entry in 1855 she was still alive but by her second in 1869 she was deceased.
Opinions welcome.
