I just got copy of marriage certificate of ggrandfather. On it says Warrant of Sheriff Subsitute, in the part which says regular marriage. What does that mean.

I just found my first one too.Suspect as the Bride was very young(17 just!) & she gave her address as a hotel that it was a "against" parental advice job.She had no occupation listed & the two witnesses were a couple living in the vicinty. The Groom was 26.Too late-1908 to check for subsuquent births & couldn't find any Death for her up to 1955.

Hi there
I've come across a couple of them as well, and think that some of them will most likely be without parental approval, or a bit of a rush job! I have found a few which appeared to be perfectly normal - just no church service. They married in hotels but gave home addresses too.
One of mine is my great grandfather who scandalised the family on the death of his wife (40) by marrying the young girl upstairs - he was 43 and she was 19. Family pressure meant they ended up moving to Canada with 3 of his 5 children, leaving two behind in Edinburgh. (My gran was left behind aged 4 with her 16 year old sister - they went to stay with their grandparents initially. It was some 40 years before she met her siblings again, although they did correspond).
He and his new wife went on to have two children and it has to be said that as the older family members died, the younger ones forgot the "difficulty" and we are still in touch with them nearly 100 years later! (They left for Canada in 1910). We lost touch with one branch until a couple of years ago when with nothing better to do one day, I Googled the names and up they popped on the web! If only I could find them all so easily ...
