Error on Certificate.....

Post by Tracey » Wed Jul 26, 2006 12:15 am

I have just remembered (another post has prompted me) to say that the first initial of my gt grandfathers name is wrong on his daughters birth entry - this is on the type written certificate (issued 1976) but is correct on the entry on SP (1902).
How mislead or confused i could have been had i not known and all because someone mis-typed an H for a W
Scotland - Donaldson / Moggach / Shaw / Geddes / Sim / Gray / Mackie / Richards / Joel / Coull / Mckimmie / Panton / McGregor
Ireland and Scotland - Casey / McDade / Phillips / McCandle / Dinely / Comaskey + various spellings

The first certificate I obtained was for my fathers birth, from Martha street in Glasgow...
After paying the fee and waiting for about an hour I received a typed extract that told me my grandfather was a "wine worker". :?

I didn't know anything about my grandfather but I was a bit bemused by the thought of him treading the grapes in some vineyard in Shettleston.

Later when I got to view the original at Park Circus it clearly says that he was a "wire worker"

researching
McIntyre, Menzies, Cowley, Pearson, Copland, McCammond, Forbes, Edgar etc. in Scotland
Skinner in Northumberland

My grandmother's birth certificate says quite clearly

Harriet Andrews Paterson - boy

now that could really confuse things!

She was born in Manchester in 1881 (I think) but to scottish parents - another point of confusion.

yup thats the one - problem with doing things from memory is I always get dates wrong!
I would guess the middle name (which is Andrews - mother's ms) confused the poor registrar.
