Hi all,
For simply ages I have been trying to find the records of birth for my great-great grandmother on my father's side.
My grandfather named her in a poem as Christina Buitte. I then found out her father was called Charles Bewitt, but I just could not find her birth anywhere on SP.
So when I visited the Aberdeen Family History Shop about 10 days ago to do my Peterhead ancestors, I decided to have a look at the Perth Index and blow me, there she was. She was actually called Christian, and there she was with a brother called John - and the spelling of the surname was BEWEATE. Not in a million years would I have thought of trying that combination. Even using wild cards in SP didn't come up with that one.
I guess non of them were literate, so the registrar just put down the name according to how the family pronounced it - and I should think this problem has affected a great many of us trying to do our research.
So keep going everyone - the truth is out there!
