Isabella Torbet death certifcate.....

Post by garibaldired » Thu Aug 03, 2006 7:20 pm

I've uploaded to the gallery the death certificate of Isabella Torbet who died in Cockpen 8 October 1857.
First of all I can't decipher her cause of death and secondly I'm puzzled that she is described as " (married) " but no husband's name is given. Furthermore, the informant is he her son and what is his surname? Is it Souter?
An Isabella Dobie married a James Torbet in Cockpen in 1843 (from the IGI) so presumably this is her?
Is it unusual for place of burial to be given? This is the first one I've found (I think!).

Hi Meg,

Death certificates of 1856 to 1860 (or 1861?) are of this style with the burial ground listed and the spouse not named.

As for the cause of death. I will need to have a longer look at that - a tricky one to decipher.

All the best,

AndrewP

Dear Meg

Am struggling to read this one! I think the son's name might be Arch Goudie (ie Archie/Archibald). Not sure why no husband given, but if she was married it might have been to a Mr Goudie ...

As for the place of burial, can say I've noticed it before, but it seems to be standard on the form. No doubt we will receive some advice from someone with more knowledge very soon

Sorry can't be of more help.

Hi Andrew,

.

Oh and I thought it was something suspicious! A pity place of burial was discontinued. What a help that would have been!

Thanks,
Meg

Hi

I think the word after gradual might be ossification.

Cause of Death

Gradual amaciation(?) the result of arterial(?) effusion into the left pleura. Six months.

Maybe Russell can clear up the medical terms?

Could it be "emaciation" ???

See http://medical-dictionary.thefreedictio ... emaciation

But I'm unsure whether "arterial" fits ..........
