Errors on Marriage Certs.

Post by Davie » Fri Aug 11, 2006 2:11 pm

Hi all,
While replying to a post on Scottish People on here, I found what I think is a fairly common error.
When it is the Grandparents names that are put in, instead of the Parents.
I have come across it three times myself.
Anyone else found this on their researches?

Frequently !

And, especially where a son is doing the informing for a death registration, not at all unusual to find that he confuses mother's/grannies'/greatgrannies maiden surnames, and even forenames.

Well, my son has no chance of forgetting my maiden name.

Being a female and not able (under accepted tradition) to pass on my family name...

I gave it to him as a christian name

How about a husband who puts his sister in laws name on his wife's death cert?

Your mother and I are obviously equally proud of our name, Stewie.

Wow! HeatherH, I'll bet that would have caused raised eyebrows

I had one that was similar and I thought it was odd ... until I found that the husband married the sister-in-law after his first wife's death

Who knows Stew. His wife was Margaret Ann Walker and her wee sister was Margaret Strachan Walker . Both grew to adulthood but only 1 married my Great Grandfather.(thank heavens as I'm having enough problems with this lot as it is)When I saw the death cert I had no choice as she hadn't used her middle name on her marriage cert but to check the census.Luckily Margaret S was still at home with her parents so he hadn't married a 13 year old.I still haven't found her birth (Margaret Ann's) but its near the top of my list .
Happy Hunting,
