Hi Davie
I agree with Lesley on the mother's name Mary Kelly M.S. Joice.
If you look at the 'J' in Judy it is almost identical.
I think the first witness is Walter McNaughton
with Margaret McGivern the second witness.
I think it must have been near lousin time. the Registrar's handwriting is about as bad as I have seen.
I never realised that years of reading Doctor's handwriting would help me now

Hi Davie,
I presume the image is from Scotland's People. You may know this already, but if you use the appropriate contact form on S.P. to tell them you can't read the image then they might post you a photocopy of the original register entry.
I tried this with 4 of my most unreadable images and they sent an A3 copy of each. These paper copies were much clearer then the digital images.

Thanks for your help with this one.
I like Walter, as that makes sense.
As he would be Hugh's uncle.
On Susan's death cert in Stirling Asylum, her parents were unknown.
But Joice is too good.
The interesting bit on Hugh's second marriage.
It has Hugh McMillan "Reputed father"
I know Catherine was his Mother, and she never married.
Has anyone come across a Reputed father before?
On this MC it is clearly James McNaughton as a witness.

Hi Davie
Yes, I have come across more than a few of those!! As far as I'm aware this is what is written in cases where the child was illegitimate, when the father has been named by the mother, but the father himself has not admitted paternity.
Best wishes

Hi Davie - I've a couple of these "reputed father" jobs as well. In one case, the child was given her mother's surname on her birth certificate in 1858, no father named, simply said "illigitimate". However, her baptism record on IGI shows her by her father's surname. I found this by searching with the child's christian name and the mother's full name, then trawling through to see if there were any I liked the look of. It actually listed both the birth under the mother's name, and the baptism some time later under the father's surname (he was named in the IGI baptism record). The baptism took place after the mother was trailed in front of the kirk session (wasn't for the last time
) and produced a note from the father admitting it all. The marriage certificate of the child (by now a woman
) shows "Reputed Father".
Might be worth a look at the relevant kirk session records - mind you the only new information I found was the "reputed" father's occupation, but it did narrow the field a wee bit
