I am trying to locate the death of a relative Duncan Lang son of Peter Lang and Mary McHardy.
Duncan was born in 1879 in Glasgow and is mention in the 1881 census at 194 Main Street Govan with his father and mother aged 1.
Hi sfather died on 23/12/1881 in Glasgow due to an industrial accident.
Mary McHardy remarried an Edward Smith in 1885 in Glasgow and did not die until 1943 in Lennoxtown.
I have tried looking on the 1891 , 1901 census and SP for Duncan's death but cannot find it anywhere, most of the other Duncan Lang's listed i can account for elsewhere in the tree.
Duncan had a sister Mary McHardy Lang who was born in 1881 and went to live with her Grand parents (another researcher of that line passed me that info) but Duncan did not and it is suspected that he died young.
The only Duncan i can find that matches is one that died in WW1 in 1917 but CWGC has no info on him or hi snext of kin.
Could somebody maybe help unravel this mystery for me ?

Hi David:
As he was relatively young when his father died, is it possible that Duncan took the name of his stepfather? or was adopted by his stepfather? or even that his death was registered by someone who was unaware that Duncan was not Edward Smith's natural child?

Well worth considering this possibility that Frances has described, David.paddyscar wrote:Hi David:

I'm currently trying to unravel an awful tangle caused by informants either not knowing the correct names or, seemingly, taking a wild stab at it

McDonald or MacDonald (some couldn't make up their mind!), Bonner, Crichton, McKillop, Campbell, Cameron, Gitrig (+other spellings), Clark, Sloan, Stewart, McCutcheon, Ireland (the surname)

I had thought of this, i have a Scally renamed McKinnnon as he was born out of wedlock and his mother subsequently remarried.
The problem being Edward Smith/Mary Smith are in Glasgow are popular names and give me a lot of hits on SP Census returns.
But on the upside Mary was born in Morayshire so should be a bit easier to track and i do have her death certificate from 1943.

Just a wee update, I have found Duncan's Death Certificate, he died in 1886 in Bridgeton Glasgow.
The problem was he was register as Ling on his Death Certificate.
I suddenly has a notion tonight to check whether i has used wild cards , i hadn't so tried it and low and below he was there.
Not the best result has he dies aged 6 but it closes off another line and demolished a big brickwall.
