Hi ally,
Yes it is possible. I have one ancestor who had her mother's or her grandmother's name on documents, depending on who was informant on the document in question. It turned out that the ancestor was illigitimate, abandoned by her mother at a young age and then was brought up by her grandmother.
I found out the true history because someone kind here found a poorhouse record for this ancestor and it was quite detailed regarding her upbringing.

Hi Nina,
You must of read my mind?
Perhaps your great grandmother, Elizabeth Mctaggart, was adopted by her grandmother, Anne Turner? What other documentation do you have to support Elizabeth's mother name?
I personally find this post interesting, because my own mother was adopted by her grandparents, therefore her mother, became her Aunt.
Regards
