Hi Davie,

Could he be an Army Bandsman?

All the best,

You got it !!

It had me fooled until I realised that the second "e" is a secretary hand "e". See the left hand of the four examples at http://www.scottishhandwriting.com/cont ... age=s3_1_2

To be honest I came in from the reverse direction in terms of arguing that the most frequent occupation starting with Army would be Army Pensioner, then realised that the problem word could well start with "Pe".....

I had previously tried long and hard, as Andrew suggests above, to make Bandsman fit, but it just wasn't right.

Note how easy it is for the eye to skip over the part of the "y" below the line, and assume that that bit of ink is linked to the letters on that line.

Incidentally the gentleman concerned is a gggrandfather of Sir Sean Connery :P

I'm in contact with his publicity agent in Beverly Hills, CA, - all this in connection with writing an article on the man in question in the "celebrity
family tree" series of articles for the UK magazine "Family History Monthly", so I'll see whit Ah can dae :!: :!:
