Query on a death cert

Hello

My great grandfather drowned in the Forth & Clyde Canal in 1895. I got this info from his death cert. How do I find out the circumstances in which he found himself in the canal? Would there have been an inquest?

Also - how do you find registered deaths from OPR?

How do I find out the circumstances in which he found himself in the canal? Would there have been an inquest?
There may have been some reports in the local newspaper. There may also have been a FAI (fatal accident enquiry) see:

Hi Deedee,

One of my ancestors drowned in the River Clyde and there was a story about the drowning in the Greenock Telegraph.

Like Ina one of my relations drowned in the Clyde. I was able to find out the story of what happened by searching the Scotsman Archives online.

One of my friend's ancestors was found drowned in the Clyde too-with his hands tied behind his back!
There was something I think in the ?Daily Record??This was slighlty later 1910 or so.What was the "rag" in Glasgow at the time-anybody know?

Likewise my Gx2 grandfather drowned in the Clyde in a Shipping Incident.

The whole episode was reported in a lot of detail in the Scotsman.

If you look int he Archives around the date of death you may find something, failing that the local newspaper.

Hello, me again (thanks for everyone's help - I'm going to try Newspaper Archives and see if there's anything there).

I'm stuck again though.

I found my g grannie's death cert from 1923, says plainly that she was 32 when she died. A couple of censuses confused me so I looked for her birth cert, and she was born in 1882 :shock: All other details, parents, etc are the same...
I've also checked to see whether there were maybe two, with one dying and being 'replaced' by a later baby. Apparently not.

Any thoughts?

My gggrandmother drowned in the Monkland Canal 23 Dec 1908 (asphyxiation by drowning)she was aged 72 in the DC, there is an RCE dated 19 Jan 1909 so I will have to wait until the RCE's are online.

I hadn't thought of looking to see if there was anything in the local papers about the drowning, as she was just a poor women. :oops: I will have to check to see what newspapers were around and if there available online to have a look.

For some reason I have thought that she might have slipped on the ice or something like that, alcohol doesn't appear to have a family history in that side of the family :roll: But of course who knows :wink:

Hi DeeDee,

Have you got your great granny's marriage cert? Do the ages you've got match there?

Also, who was the informant on the death certificate? Sometimes if it's someone removed from the family some of the info isn't as accurate as it could be. She may have looked young for her age or in the grief of it all the informant gave the wrong information, I know my mum gave the wrong place of birth for my gran on her death certificate.

If that doesn't work I'll pop back on my thinking hat....multi tasking here as trying to prepare school lunchboxes but we all know waht's more interesting!
