Hi Dennis,
Here are my thoughts on this one.
John Paterson, Master Plumber,
Married firstly to Barbara Reid(?) [try 1824 Canongate, Edinburgh]
Secondly to Elizabeth Shiells [no sign of on IGI]
Thirdly to Mary Ri____,
Fourthly to Mary White, [2 possibilities in 1848 on IGI]
Fifthly to Agnes Scott(?) [no sign of on IGI]
1866 June Twenty-sixth 2h0m AM
3 Henry Place, Edinburgh
"Four weddings and a Funeral" is on the TV just now. This man beats that - five weddings and a funeral.
All the best,
AndrewP

Well done, in terms of the quality of the digitised image of the microfiche !!
This gentleman will now feature in my lectures, as I've only ever had examples involving maximum 4 spouses

Hi:)
Well, it looks like John did a Henry VIII and had a 6th wife. John, a widower at the time, married Agnes Borthwick on Feb 24, 1865.

Given the informant's, - a son, - extensive knowledge of his father's marriages, the date of the death, 1866, and the date of this marriage to Agnes Borthwick, - 1865, I have to wonder is Agnes was Agnes SCOTT previously BORTHWICK, or similar, - does the 1865 marriage register entry give any hints in terms of her marital status and/or parents' names?Dennis wrote:Hi:)

Hi David;
I think you've nailed it. I received the following reply from Scotlandspeople today:
I can't see any marriage going back to 1855 for an Agnes Scott, nor any
cross referenced deaths so I think in fact the son has possibly given
the wrong surname for his final stepmother, and Agnes Scott and
Borthwick are the same person maybe. As she is a widow when she marries
John, I think it's possible her previous married name may have been
Scott but she hasn't put this on her marriage entry to John Paterson but
HUgh knew her as Agnes Scott.
Just thinking !
So it looks like we're back at 5 wives:)
