Post by saroho » Mon Oct 23, 2006 1:40 am

Iam trying to find my greatgrandmothers birth certificate, she was b. approx 1893 d on 17-12-1928 at Govan Glasgow aged 35. Ive found all her siblings births all in Kenning park Glasgow. Ive spend hours searching on Scotlands People with no luck. Her name is Euphemia Crossan and her parents are Bernard Crossan and Jane Barlow. Please can any one help?

Hello Sandra

I dont know it you have tried this.
On SP enter:

Crossan E* 1892-1894 Lanark, Kinning Park there is only one result. There are no results at all for Euphemia, so perhaps that was not her given name at birth.

I hope this is her sorry I have no credits left to check it out.

Oh and I nearly forgot tick the use soundex box, remember spelling of names back then varied often.

Hi Sandra

Well I'm not a bit surprised...took me a few tries until I took it down to the bare bones with wildcards and located the family on the 1891 and 1901 census..........try this one:

1892 CROSS EUPHEMIA HANNAH F CAMLACHIE GLASGOW CITY/LANARK 644/02 1600

And I suggest you send a contact form to Scotlands People and tell them of the indexing error. I'm quite certain they'll give you some credit refund for your lost searches. I think they'll agree it's very clearly written CROSSAN on the original.

Best wishes
Jean

ps.......and :D welcome to TalkingScot!

Hi Sandra,

There is a Mary Crossan in my Husband's Family b 1834.
I also have had trouble with the CROSSAN name
as it came up on a Census as CROSSING.

I wonder if these two Families are connected ?
Mary Crossan married Alexander Mathie 1854 Barony Lanark.
and had 9 children, all born in the Dalziel area of Lanark.
No Bernard amongst them.
I have not searched the Crossan family in any depth prior to Mary but maybe there is a connection I. E. Cousins ?
Cheers.
Maureen

There's two general techniques with wildcards.

The one I would normally start with is to use a wildcard where I suspect that there may be/may not be a double letter, a variation in the vowel, a trailing "s" etc., in other words, retaining the sounds that I'd expect to see survive. Included here would be designing the wildcard search to take account of known spelling variations, e.g. THOM*SON for THOMPSON/THOMSON, or HARD* for HARDY/HARDIE, etc., etc.. Sometimes separate searches are required to cover all the possibilities.

And, always but always, never just MC or MAC, but M*C :!:

In this case I'd have started off with CROS*N, and moved on to CR*S*N if the first approach didn't work, maybe also sticking on a wildcard at the end which is generally worth a go unless it leads to too great a number of hits, i.e. CROS*N* and CR*S*N* .

If that fails, then, as here, I've quite often had success by chopping off the end of the name, - as here CROSS* or CROS*.

Remember as well that SP is one of the few sites where a leading wildcard is allowed, so that the reverse can be searched. In this case, had all else failed, I'd probably have given *OSSAN and similar a go !

I've ended up in my examples using * only, but ? is also useful, e.g. RE?D, rather than REID or READ ...........

Hi

Can I add to David's comments about wildcards.

I always look for Mc with M*c* I have been caught out several times by the transcription separating the Mac from the rest of the surname.
