Marriage 1874 Registration 1875

Post by Russell » Wed Nov 01, 2006 9:50 pm

Having been given a marriage date in 1874 for rellies we obediently keyed in the year 1874 on scotlandspeople - no result :?:

 We broadened the year search +/- 1 and it appeared under 1875.

The marriage was indeed in 1874 31st December but the registration of the event was not until January 2nd 1875 :!:

Pity the times were not recorded too because that would identify that even in 1874/5 bureaurocracy kept office hours. :?
It appears that SP use the registration of an event as the marker date NOT the date of the event itself.

MORAL when searching use a +/- figure no matter what you have been told.

Birth, Marriage or Death, in the Scottish registers from 1855 onwards, it has always been the date of the registration that counts in terms of the indexes, not the date of the event.

Hi Russell
I've seen this often with births. The date of registration is what counts.

Best wishes
Lesley

And I have had this same situation occur as I have many ancestors who married on 31st December. This was something to do with the fact that the next day was a public holiday, or at least an acceptable day to take off. So now, even if I know the year of an event, I usually search a year or two either way.
