Help Deciphering

Post by caraid » Thu Nov 09, 2006 4:43 pm

Hi Folks,
Need help on this 1855 Certificate, Wilson, Elizabeth, especially the names of the children as it is very scored out. Why?
I can make out Elizabeth ?? 50. Agnes, Thomas, Isabella & Sarah.
Agnes is my 3rd G Granny and on her DC it had her parents as John Mitchell (tinsmith) & Agnes Wilson, but Agnes just happens to be Elizabeth. Got them on the 1841 and 1851, then John died before 1855 (shame on him :D )

Hope someone can help
Thanks in advance
Caraid

Hi Caraid,

This registrar has set a challenge. Here is what I can make out. See what you think.

1 Elizabeth aged 50
2 Catherine - - 48
3 ???? - - - - -43
4 John died at 12 in
5 Agnes - - - -
6 Thomas - - - -
7 Isabella - - - 34
8 Sarah - - - - -25
??? three others who died in infancy

I think this is one for you to submit a contact form on the ScotlandsPeople website, telling them that the certificate is difficult to read. They should send you out a photocopy from the book which should be a much clearer copy.

All the best,

AndrewP

I don't think anything is scored out, - it's just the lines on the form coming through, the registrar creating separate boxes by interlines between the form lines, plus there being "________" after various names to bring the ages into line.

And it's "Besides three others who died in infancy"

Hi Caraid

I go along with David

I think for Jessie died at 12 yrs

I wondered at first whether the second one was Euphemia but came down on the side of Catherine.

Just as well they're not all as difficult as that. Didn't they know that 150 years later we would all be drooling at the thought of an 1855 certificate.

Thanks very much folks. I have sent a contact form so I'll see what happens. Since I posted I know there was a Catherine who was wed to a Robert Ormiston, their daughter was with Elizabeth Wilson in 1851. I have a few more possible marraiges for the other children to check out tommorow. Just waiting for the wages to enter the Bank
Thanks again

p.s I'll let you all know the outcome from SP

Didn't realise that there was still some debate over the various names .....

My take is .......

1. Elizabeth aged 50
2. Catherine. ....48
3. Jane........ ..43
4. Jessie died at 12 in ___
5. Agnes
6. Thomas
7. Isabella... .....29
8. Sarah...... .25
Besides three others
who died in infancy.

Whether or not it's "Jessie died at 12 in ___" or "Jessie died at 12 m" I'm unsure, but, after a further think, tend to the latter, - on a quick look I couldn't see any "in" or lower case "m" on the page to compare with.

A search technique to use on scotlandspeople if you haven't already tried it is to search in the death indexes on the basis of the year of birth +/- whatever allowable figure gives you the lowest number of hits in the first instance.
