I have have downloaded a 1967 death entry for a Alexander Bryce, but it has no cause of death, it does have a correction note at the side, is there any way I can view the corrected entry

Not yet. Sometime, hopefully in the next few months, the Registers of Corrected Entries (RCEs) should come online and be available on ScotlandsPeople, linked to the original death certificate.

(I take it your 1967 date above is a mistake.)

You can view but only if you can(or somebody on your behalf) could visit NRH in Edinburgh in person.
They're on Microfilm usually they give bare facts-found drowned in pond at 11 a.m for one of mine but it did contain burial info.

I think they should be available to view online at Park Circus as they are in New Register House. May be worth phoning them first to confirm - or can someone here on TalkingScot confirm this point?

Had some spare time at NRH earlier today.

There is indeed an RCE entry in connection with Alexander BRYCE's death, but, for some reason, there isn't yet a digitised image of the RCE entry on the DIGROS system.

His death was obvious sudden, hence the reference to the Procurator Fiscal, and no entry as a result in terms of the cause of death in the death register, i.e. not being ill in the run up to his death, so therefore no regular medical attendant, so that there was no cause of death given on the death register entry.

Instead, as was the Scottish process, the sudden death was referred to the Procurator Fiscal, with the information from the PF's medical representative being fed back to the registrar, and entered in his Register of Corrected Entries.

In this case .........

"Night of 22nd or morning of 23rd in the house of Michael Templeton, Joiner, residing in Dumfries.

[Cause of death] Rupture of the Aorta.

Buried Douglas ChurchYard."

Sounds a bit like a case of sudden death syndrome that one occasionally reads about these days ........

Hi Thomsos

The usual cause of rupture of the Aorta is Aortic Aneurysm.

That describes a weakening of the wall of the blood vessel which gradually balloons out and eventually gives up under the constant pressure of the blood against it. A very rapid and rather peaceful way to go really. Death within about 4-5 minutes and no real pain.
Seen it happen and it also killed my father who lay there with a calm smile on his face.
Traumatic for the family though.
They can do something about it now though !
