Birth query.....

Post by ladybird » Sun Apr 24, 2005 10:05 am

Entry of Birth in the Parish of Keith in the County of Banff
#118, Albert Drake, 20th May 1886, 5pm, Broomhill Terrace, Keith, Banff
father Frederick Drake, Musician, mother Mary Drake ms Hadden. married 15th Jan 1884, Newcastle on Tyne
Informant James Taylor, MS & CM present at the confinement.
Registered 14th June 1886 at Keith, Registrar James MacDonald

I have the above from SP. This couple were actually English but moved around a lot as Fred was a violinist in an orchestra.

Does anyone have any suggestions at who/what the "MS & CM present at confinement" might mean, please?

You need to stick another comma in so that it reads....
James Taylor, MS & CM, present at confinement.

In other words he was a doctor, present at some point during the confinement, if not the birth as well. "CM" is "Chirurgiae Magister", - Master of Surgery. "MS" I'm not so sure about........... is it plainly "MS" or could it be "MD"?... see my other, separate post re medical qualifications.

Thanks Mary and Davie, that was quick!
Looks like it could be MB (Bachelor of Medicine)
Oh dear she must have been having a hard time.

many thanks, Sylvia
PS. I'll fix the comma :D

What was the status of the family, and wealth or otherwise?......

"MB & CM" or sometimes ChM is very normal, - MB = Medicinae Baccalaureus = Bachelor of Medicine

Not having looked at the record, I wasn't clear if there was a comma missing on the original, or if "Present" and the rest were on different lines.

When I first read it I thought for a moment that two people, initials MS and CM were present, before I realised that it had to be the quite unusual situation where the doctor acted as the informant, - don't know if I've ever seen that before !.......

I don't know about this family being wealthy?
They certainly seemed to move around a lot .... Father Frederick and sons Thomas and Albert were all violinists, family legend says a Symphony Orchestra. I don't know which one though.

Another gem from Mum is that Albert owned a Stradivarius (sp?) which he left to his nephew in his will as he and Auntie Dolly had no children.

If he owned a Strad then he was certainly able to pay for a well qualified doctor to attend his wife's confinement :!: :!: Stradivarius violins are currently between $25,000.00 and $200,000.00 in value...a rarer specimen, in fine condition, could bring substantially more. :!: :!:
