Hi Pandabean
The two mothers look to me like:
Margaret Rutherford m.s. Carr (deceased)
&
Margaret Vance m.s. Crossan
Certainly looks like (Corporal, A ? ... and could be corps as you suggest, but I'm not at all sure. I'm not convinced that first letter is a "C", but it could be....
Best wishes
Lesley

Re: Deciphering Help
Is the maiden name Crossan (?). I'm probably not the best person to try and help but I thought I'd give it a go.Pandabean wrote:also can anyone work out the maiden name of the mother?
Can't with the other bit. Sorry.
Researching:
Duff - Perthshire/Dundee/Glasgow
McKendry - Antrim, NI/Stonehouse, Lanarkshire, Scotland

CARR and CROSSAN both agreed.
Corporal, - Yes!
"A", - Yes!
"S", - only maybe !
And I'm far from convinced re "Corp" due to the glitch in the microfilm, based perhaps on a slip of the pen or other imperfection in the original register entry - on a visit to New Register House in Edinburgh it is possible to view the original register, and it is nearly always the case that such a problem is immediately resolved !
Alternatively, a look at the acronym section of regiments.org at http://regiments.org/regiments/abbrev.htm might assist you, but remember that there could be an initial missing "Royal" or suchlike.

Would agree with Lesley on the maiden names but can't help at all with the bracketed occupation.
It does look like A.S. Corps but there is not enough detail left in the last bit to do more than guess. Even the S is questionable when you look at the wide variation in how he has formed 'S' for other entries.
I tried altered contrast, negative images, magnification, took glasses off, put them back on; Nothing can replace the missing line segments.
Sorry

Hmmm, I looked on The NA and found three corporal Andrew Rutherfords and one of them is in the Army Service Corps. At first I thought it might have been the Argylls.
