I need help deciphering mothers maiden name

Post by StewL » Sun Dec 31, 2006 4:15 am

Hello all

I am usually not too bad at deciphering names on documents, buth this one has me stumped.

Can anyone help with the maiden name of Isabella Prentice's mothers maiden name.

She married my grandfathers twin Thomas Stewart in Bellshill in 1902.
I cant for the life of me work out what the name is meant to be.

Ta everyone.

I will upload the image and wait approval. :D

Hi Stewie

Happy New Year to you when it comes!

It sure looks like McINDO to me....and a search for her death is pretty conclusive on that...

1911 PRENTICE ELIZABETH MCFADYEN MCFADYAN MCINDOE F 59 BELLSHILL /LANARK 625/03 0224

Best wishes
Jean

Thanks very much Jean and quck too.

I couldnt see that name as McIndo

I was caught in the trap that it looked to me like a G after the Mc.
Once your head gets caught in looking at it one way you cant seem to change it.

Again thanks :D

There's actually a very faint "e" on the end, so it's McINDOE on the birth register entry as well.

Actually I wondered about the e part but couldn't be certain...although I opted for the trailing wildcard to find the DC just to be sure to pick up all the choices....there was still only one! I've never seen it spelled without the e but thought it might be possible.

Thanks again Jean and David

I thought there was a hint of an e on the end but wasnt sure if it was just a mark or not.

I will have a look at them but as they aren't direct descendants I am not sure how far I will go.

At the present my credits have expired on SP so I will wait unit I get some more to have a look at her DC.

"McINDOE" is a very famous surname in Scotland in terms of the seminal work of Dr Sir Archibald McIndoe CBE FRCS (May 4, 1900 - April 11, 1960) in relation to his work involving burns of RAF personnel in WWII, -see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Archibald_McIndoe .

DWW

I recall seeing a brilliant documentary on him a while ago.

I finally got Elizabeth McIndoe's DC and it threw up a few surprises.
Firstly she remarried a William McFadyan in 1884. he was a hammerman.
Secondly her parents are different on the MC from the DC on her DC her parents are Henry McIndoe Ironstone Miner (Dec) and Annie McDowall (Dec) Informant was her son John Prentice, and William was now a blacksmith.
On her MC to William McFaydon (sic) her parents are Henry McIndoe (Agricultural labourer) and Ann Daley, both deceased. Both made their marks on MC so probably didnt realise the spelling of MacFaydon may have been incorrect.
And finally I cant seem to find a BC for Isabella Prentice who was born about 1882 according to the age on her MC to my grand uncle.

AS these are not direct lines I am not sure how far I am willing to pursue this lot though. It has already cost me a few credits on SP
