Can anyone tell me what U means under sex of child ?

I would think Unknown or Unrecorded - I'm sure someone else will let you know if there is an official meaning.

Hi Maddy,

This was quite common in the IGI for the OPRs. If the entry in the OPR did not say son or daughter, but just said child, then the transcribers' instructions were not to make any assumptions, even if the name made it obvious. If it was not clearly an M or an F, then it was a U (presumably unrecorded or unknown as Trish said).
