Post by caraid » Tue Jan 09, 2007 9:11 pm

Hi all you Decipherers
Just uploaded this Marraige cert

http://talkingscot.com/gallery/displayi ... p?pos=-985

What I need to know is what it says in the parent section.
I get William Ross ? ? deceased, Anne? Ross m.s. Macintyre?
and
William Wallace????? ------Wallace m.s. Thomson deceased

Got lots of certs from both N Leith & S Leith and they are all difficult to read.
Thanks in advance
Caraid

Hi Caraid,

I would go for
William Ross, Road Contractor, deceased
Ann Ross, ms. MacIntyre, deceased
William Wallace, Chance Plater (No. B. Ry. Coy.)
______Wallace, ms. Thomson, deceased

I'm not sure about chance, but am struggling to see anything else there.
I think it looks like plater, but someone has written Porter above it.
No. B. Ry. Coy. = North British Railway Company

All the best,

Thanks Andrew
Just had a wee look on the IGI and there was a Margaret Wallace born 1842 (St. Cuthberts) to a William Wallace and Joanna Thomson. Found Margaret on 1871 census, (she says she was born S Queensferry) her daughter married one of my Walkers.
It will be the usual trail of half truths, cause I think the daughter was illegitimate.
Anyway onwards I go, these Walkers are nothing but a pain
Thanks again

In 1851 William Dick Wallace, husband of Joanna and father of Margaret, was a "Solicitor Supreme Courts In Practice" in Edinburgh St Cuthberts. This seems a far cry from a railway porter... or whatever a "chance" is! Is this another story of theirs, or is there another William and ___ Thomson couple out there somewhere with a daughter named Margaret?
Good luck with these folks!
Sarah

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmm...................................

I'd go with Andrew's "Chance Porter (No. B. Ry. Coy.)", but why would someone pencil in "Porter" above, perchance the registrar when he registered the death of a William Wallace a couple of months later ...... see http://talkingscot.com/gallery/displayi ... p?pos=-986 , for a 62 year old William Wallace, 62 year old, "Porter (NorthB), married to Elizabeth Wallace, formerly Ann Thomson".

Pure coincidence ??............

B****r, in fact double b****r, [rant] [rant] , as I thought that I'd double-checked all such possible cross links, but guess I got fixated on "Richard" the death register informer, and "Richard" the marriage witness.

Weel spotted =D> =D> [5 cups]

A huge thankyou to you all.
I think I have managed to sort most of them out now.
William Wallace, christened 1808 Cramond, died 1871 in North Leith (thanks David) Not too sure whether his first wife was Ann or Elizabeth, but 2nd was Ann Thomson. Found them on 1841, 1851, 1861 Census
Daughter Margaret (who the original post was about) had several illegitimate children. On the 1871 census with husband whom she had just married she had Ann 5yrs & Elizabeth 3yrs. William did a runner  because in 1879 she had another illeg daughter Janet. It says Margaret Ross m.s Wallace wife of William Ross, General Labourer, who she declares is not the father of the child & further that she has had no personal communications with him. (next 2 lines too small to read)
Have also managed to find Williams brother Richard & sister Margaret on the 1881.
Better go and file all this info away now :D
Cheers
