certificate of proclamation

Post by frances » Fri Jan 19, 2007 6:24 pm

I have a certificate of proclamation for Robert Galloway & Margaret Fleming 6th & 13th September 1936 at Possilpark Church Glasgow, however their marriage certificate shows that they were married 25th September 1936 at 1350 Maryhill Road Glasgow by the minister of Kelvinside Old Parish Church can anyone say if this was unusual and why the difference between proclamation and marriage.

Thanks

Frances :D

Hi Frances
I'd think that the certificate of proclamation referred to the banns being read on two occasions prior to the marriage. 6th and 13th Septemeber were both Sundays, 25th was a Friday.

Best wishes
Lesley

The "proclamation" is the public announcement of the intention to marry, not the marriage itself.

Thanks for that .

It was actually the fact that the proclamation was read and the actual marriage was conducted in different places and by a different minister that was of interest to me.

Now that is interesting :!:

Could it be that what you have is the certificate of proclamation from the groom's church, whereas, in accordance with tradition, the marriage took place in the bride's church?

How do the different churches fit in with what is known of the addresses for the couple, and therefore local parish churches?

HI David

The plot thickens :?

On looking at the certificates it would appear that the brides home add. was near Possilpark (where the bans were read) the groom lived in Strathaven and the marriage took place in 1350 Maryhill Road Glasgow. I will need to check this add. but the marriage certificate does not indicate that it is a church.

Hi Frances

Remember that in Scotland marriages did not have to conducted in a church. I have just been recording one where it took place in the "Adelphi Halls, New Sneddon, Paisley". So the banns would be read in the churches of the bride & groom but the marriage could have taken place in a hotel or hall or whereever.

Hi Frances,

A Google search shows that 1350 Maryhill Road is now a pub - The Politician. I have no idea whether it is a modern building, or an old building that could have been the marriage place in question.

All the best,

According to the 1927 Glasgow Directory this address was Conservative Hall.
