Hi Karen,

I see the following on the marriage certificate.
  • 1870, on the Fifteenth Day of February at the Catholic Chapel, Rutherglen
After Banns according to the Forms of the Roman Catholic Church

(Signed) William McMenemy, Railway Labourer (Bachelor), 22, Parish of Cambuslang
(Signed) Susan Semple, Domestic Servant (Spinster), 26, Parish of Cambuslang

Hugh McMenemy, Agricultural Labourer and Catherine McMenemy, m.s. McGurk (deceased)
Hugh Semple, Freestone Quarrier and Catherine Semple, m.s. McNeil

    (Signed) John Shaw, Cath. Priest
    (Signed) John Lafferty, Witness
    (Signed) Ellen Cunningham, Witness

    1870 February 18th at Rutherglen
    Archibald Gilchrist, Registrar
An IGI search finds neither marriage. An IGI parent search for each of the couples (parents) gives only one result, Susannah Semple, born 1843 Cambuslang, presumably the one being married as Susan.

A parent seach on the William McMenemy and Susan Semple gives two results: Mary McMenemy (1871) and Ann McMenemy (1873), both Cambuslang. The IGI stops at 1875 for records extracted from the Scottish records, so there may have been more born to this family.

All the best,

AndrewP

Hello Karen,

I got the same as Andrew except I thought the groom's mother's maiden name was McTurk.

I think Andrew is correct.

Kind regards,
Annette M

"McGurk" it is, - see the capital G in Glasgow in the place of marriage in the record below, - this registrar's capital Gs don't go beneath the line!

Just curious, are your McMenemy's from Ireland and does the name have various spellings?

I too am related to this line back in the 1860s. They are from the MidCalder (West Lothian) area.
