Help with uploading Please, please please

Hi
I am attempting to upload a marriage registration for James Baxter in 1855 at Stirling. I keep getting time out messages and that the file size is too large
I am on Dial up, and in this particular situation it is extremely slow about 14kbs.

What would be the best size of image to upload knowing these facts.
