High Ardwell, Wigtonshire

Post by Lorna B. » Mon Jan 29, 2007 10:02 pm

Has anyone knowledge of High Ardwell farm in Stoneykirk. Circa 1800 the McMaster family/ies lived there. My ancestral trail keeps leading me there. There seem to be so many people living there in the early 1800's with the same names that I am struggling to sort them out. :?
Also may I add another question
In 2 branches of my family in different parts of Scotland babies named Patrick at baptism became Peter on the rest of their official documents. They were born between 1760 and 1800. Was this common practice at that time? :? AGAIN!
I would just love to live in Stoneykirk for a few weeks and sort out all my queries.

Lorna.

Peter and Patrick should be regarded as the same name. They are regularly to be found on different documents for what is plainly the same person.

All the best,

Thank you for confirming my suspicions. It can be quite confusing.

McMASTER is also a frequently occurring surname in S Ayrshire, - places such as Girvan and the surrounding parishes.

Thank you for your help. The map is helpful. I have done nothing this morning except enjoy the TS website. It really is a joy.
