Searching for Births Post 1906, Marriages 1931, Deaths 1956

Post by Oneday » Wed Feb 07, 2007 10:18 am

I very reasently found out that my Grandfather's sister married in Scotland in 1904. She had a daughter in 1906 (both records I now have copies of from scotlandpeople). I've also found that she sadley died in (Helen/Nellie Mercer) 1918. I know that Frances (1st daughter 1906) had a brother and two sisters from a will dated 1971 of another of my grandfathers sisters (Douglas, Margaret & Maise). I'd like to try and find out when they were born and if possible what happended to them, did they get married have a family or are they even still alive? All their records are not on line. I think from reading various posting that they can be researched at NRH.
Can someone please advise me exactly what can and cant be researched at the NRH and what form these records take. Is it a index that has to be manually search or a computer database or ..........?
I'm trying to plan a visit and will need to book some time in advance at the NRH but without the info am unsure how long I'll need.

Thanks for your help

Hi Oneday

Welcome to TalkingScot !

From the title of your post I assume that you have everything that's available on ScotlandsPeople.

All the records after the "SP dates" can be accessed at NRH in Edinburgh, plus Park Circus in Glasgow, and a few other locations in Scotland.

There's no closure period for these records, - everything is available right up to date.

At NRH and Park Circus, access is available via computerised indexes, which lead directly to digitised images apart from the last couple of years, - one or more such years lacking digitised images may be available on microfiches.

Indexes only contain the surname, given name(s), registration district, and year; but from 1928/29 onwards the birth indexes also include the maiden surname of the mother (as long as the parents were married); and from 1974 onwards, the death indexes include the maiden name of the mother of the deceased.

As well as simple BMD searches, there are two very powerful cross-check searches, - for a marriage using both names, and for the death of a married female using both married and maiden surnames.

The major drawback at NRH on this DIGROS system is that wildcards can't be used (there is an implied wildcard for given names, - i.e. the system will search on the basis of " J* " if you just enter " J " in the search field).

The old "green on black" index search system can still be used, and that has limited variant names possibilities.
