hi
how can i find out if my g.g parents were church of england or catholic,as my father never told me,andrew bennett morgan married jane marshall 1835,hope someone can help thank you .joyce

Hi Joyce,

I was in Edinburgh Central Library this morning and looked up Andrew Bennet Morgan's marriage OPR.

OPR for South Leith wrote:Andrew Bennet Morgan, workman, residing in the parish of South Leith and Jane Marshall residing in the said parish, daughter of the late William Marshall, weaver there, were three times proclaimed in order to marriage on the 29th March 1835, no objections being offered, and were married on the 8th April 1835 by the Rev. Ebenezer Halley, Leith.

So from that, the new information is the confirmation of the name of Jane's father and his occupation. Count this information as a bonus as it is only given in a minority of OPRs.

As the OPR does not name any other church that the marriage or banns took place in, the assumption is that it was South Leith Parish Church (Church of Scotland).

thank you for the infomation,i have ordered extracts which cost 10 pounds but im not sure what it means,it reads as follows
marshall,jane(o.p.r)marriages
o.p.r no 692:suffix:2 film no.:23 frame no 6128)quantity 1.does that mean i have ordered amarriage cert.thank you for your help i sent for the cert from scotlandspeople.regards joyce

You have ordered the OPR that I have quoted above.
692/02 = South Leith Parish
It was in the microfilm of book 23 (marriages 1819-1838)
I did not note the page number, but it will equate to frame 6128.
