Hi folks. I am trying to find my Cameron line. What i have is Peter Cameron(c1832-1884). His death cert says father Duncan, mother Margaret Spence. In the 1851 census i have Peter living with Duncan in Gallows Gate, Glasgow. It says Duncan is 60. His wife though is a Margaret with a son called Allan Matherson, so i presume this Margaret is not Margaret Spence but a Margaret Matherson that he has married. In 1841 i find a Duncan aged 40 living with a Peter aged 8 but there is an Isabella who i presume is a wife. Could he have married 3 times? Duncan & Margaret Spence married in 1828. Incidently Peter says he was born in Stirling.
Any ideas?
Mark

Hi Mark
How old is the child, Allan Matherson in the 1851 census and what is his place of birth? How old is Margaret in the 1851 census?
What is Margaret's name in 1851.....Matherson or Cameron?
Is the child Allan described as Margaret's son or Duncan's son?
Another question. Are you sure the name is Matherson? Could it be Mathieson or Mathewson?
Lots of questions, I know, but it may help to sort things out if we can find out who Allan Matherson is
Best wishes
Jean

Hiya,
Allan is transcribed as William. He is 11 and stepson, i presume to Duncan, the head of the house. Both Allan & Margaret are born in Ireland. Margaret is a Cameron and 38. Duncan is a hand loom weaver. Ive found the IGI marriage of Duncan and Margaret Spence in Barony(wheres this) in 1828. A daughter, Catherine, is born to them in 1838 too.
Could the Isabella, Duncan & Peter be a different family in 1841?
Cannot find a Duncan, Margaret, Peter & Catherine together in 1841.

Ive just had a look at the 1841 again, the 1 with an Isabella. She has the same job as Duncan, could she be his sister? The Duncan & Peter may not be them. Its in Glasgow St David. It says Duncan was not born in the county and Peter was. I have them on the 1851 index and Peter is from Stirling and Duncan from Glasgow which is the other way round to the 1841. Confusing or did the enumerator just write it wrong??

I thought of the brother/sister relationship too but discounted it when I saw she was born in Ireland. Not impossible I know but I don't think so.
Then again it is not usual for a wife to be working.
The only other thing that bothers me is that in 1841 Peter should be 7 and born out of county, if the 1881 is correct. Does it say he was born in Stirling in 1851?
More questions than answers I'm afraid.
Kind regards,
Annette M
