Nicholson birth
Hi everyone,
Trying to find the birth of a MARY ANN NICHOLSON in Glasgow, but getting nowhere.
Her parents were RICHARD NICHOLSON and MARTHA CROSSAN.
Not sure the exact year she was born, but she's on the 1871 census as age 13. She's then mentioned in her fathers poor relief application in 1873 as age 16, and again in 1876 where her age is still 16. In the 1876 application it mentions that she's gone to America to work as a weaver. It also mentions in the applications that she was born in Glasgow.
She had a sister Esther born in 1857 and a sister Isabella born 1863 so I guess she was born in between. However can't find her on the 1861 census.
Any suggestions?

Hi Andrew,
Sorry maybe wasn't very clear in my post, but I have the Nicholson family in 1861, it's just Mary Ann that I can't find as she's not with her parents or any relatives that I know of.
Thanks very much for looking though.

Hi Caroline,
Here is an odd one:
1861
23 Tower St, Duddingston, Midlothian
Mary Ann Handyside, 62, head, born Edinburgh, Proprietor of House
Elizabeth Handyside, 28, daughter, born Inveresk, Governess
Margaret E Handyside, 25, daughter, born Inveresk
Mary Ann Nicholson, 75, granddaughter
, born Inveresk
Isabella Trumbull, 17, servant, born Penstone, East Lothian, Gen Serv
Not to say this is your Mary Ann, since the birth place is wrong, but it looks very much like the age has been mistranscribed. Hard to have a granddaughter who is 13 years older than you
And grandmother won't work either
So if anyone has access to better details on this, it might be worth a look, just in case...
Regards,
Sarah

Hi Sarah,
Had a look on the IGI and this could possibly be that Mary Anns birth:
MARY ANN NICHOLSON
Female
Event(s):
Birth:
Christening: 03 APR 1846 Inveresk With Musselburgh, Midlothian, Scotland
Parents:
Father: THOMAS WILLIAM NICHOLSON
Mother: HELEN HANDASYDE
So it looks as though her age is actually 25, not 75!
Thanks for taking the time to look though Sarah.

Hi Caroline,
Glad that's cleared up-- I knew something had to be wrong with her age! Sorry I'm not finding your Mary Ann
But it's not for lack of trying... Found a Mary Ann Williams in the US in 1880, married, born in Scotland abt 1857, a weaver... but later records seemed to indicate her maiden surname was McBride.
Oh well. Back to the drawing board. Do you have any idea where she was in America? I know, your question was about finding her in 1861, but I can't help jumping ahead
All the best,
Sarah

Hi again Sarah,
Thanks for continuing the search!
I would really like to find out what happened to her in America as well as in 1861, but I'm afraid the poor relief application just said 'America' with no further clues. She must have went between 1873 and 1876 and surely she was a bit young to go on her own?
It just strange there's no birth record for her, and that she's not with the family in 1861.

Hi Caroline,
I see from the IGI Richard NICHOLSON and Martha CROSSAN married in 1844, do you have any of their older children from censuses? Just asking as there is a birth for a Marion (I have found Mary Ann to be interchangable with Marion in my family) Kirkland NICOLSON 19 Oct 1860 Milton, Glasgow mother Sarah NICOLSON. Mayby Mary Ann was a granddaughter they brought up as their own.
