Hi Heather,

I have scoured the 1850s map of Hawick on the National Library of Scotland's digital library website for Mid Row. It is not named there, but I have a suggestion of where I think it probably was.

Go to: http://www.nls.uk/maps/townplans/hawick.html

Click on XXV.7.8 (left column, second from the bottom)

Click on the area at the far right, just below the centre where you see two parallel streets.

When you have clicked on these enough times to be able to read the writing you will see Back Row and Fore Row. My suggestion is that these are the two outer rows of houses and that the row down the middle of these two should be Mid Row, just that it is not named on this map.

All the best,

AndrewP

Ta Annette and Andrew,
I have rellies from Back Row and later last night I found Fore Row so I was assuming this was Mid.
I also couldn't find a location but thanks to Andrew I can now have a look see at where this story all unfolds.
Cheers,
HeatherH

The "Mid Row" or "Mid Raw" was, as surmised in a posting here, a row of houses between the "Fore Raw" and the "Back Raw". It was an area of very cramped housing for some of the poorest people in Hawick. It was demolished in 1884, and the site is now the centre of Drumlanrig Square.
