Hi,
I've just found a marriage cert for someone but the father's name on it doesn't match the father's name on the birth cert. Its the right person because everything else matched fine. Any ideas on why this could be? The Birth was in 1868 and the marriage in 1886.
Thanks

Hi Vikki and welcome!
The most obvious reason is that it was just stated incorrectly by the person supplying the information. Was the father listed as deceased on the MC? If so then the person may not have remembered him well. I'm assuming here it is just the first name that is different and not the surname too!? This does leave you with the situation of now proving which name is correct. In most instances (and especially if it were the father who was informant on the BC and therefore gave his own details and signature) the earlier record will reflect more accurate data.
If this doesn't help then perhaps if you share some further details we can review the various certificates and help you to sort it out.
Best wishes

Hi Jean and thanks for your help,
The thing is it gets a tad complicated.
The daughter (Jane) on the MC was born in 1868 but in 1870 her 1/2 brother (Alex) was born illigitamately No father stated. Janes father (William) left to live in china in somewhere between 68 and 71 (He wasnt in census) So i'm wondering if the name on the MC was the actual father and the name on the BC was just on because william was still about then (He registered the birth) , but he wasnt in 1886 when she got married.
Did they have to show BC's when they got married then?
Thanks
Vikki

Hi Vikki
I've never heard that a BC was needed to be shown in order to be married. Perhaps the man she named as her father on her MC was a step father or just a father figure if her true father was out of the picture from when she was tiny???? I am trying not to read too much in to this!!
but perhaps you have the benefit of family stories that are leading you to other possible conclusions!
