Have Birth record..gives Marriage date..but can't find it...

Post by Wendy » Mon May 09, 2005 6:00 pm

hello,

Have finally found Hugh Campbell ( MORELAND) child Of the illusive mother, Annie Campbell (previously MORELAND)M.S. ANDERSON and John Campbell Mason Journeyman, BIRTH 8 Sept 1901 Cathcart Parish county of Renfrew, Scotland :D ...am still looking for his brother James Campbell

on the record it gives( MARRIAGE ) May 27th,1901 Gorbals, District , Glasgow....so of course go looking for the marriage details...NO CAN FIND :?

from all accounts of Hugh I have ALL his references to his name are : MORELAND, except for his birth record....NOW

Do you suppose they just gave a date...as not being married would look bad...do you have to produce any documentation at registration ...hahahahaha.....I am assuming no considering all the mistakes we have seen in some records...

They had 2 boys...Hugh and James ...but I am also considering that John the father...either died....fled the scene..not impressed with fatherhood and the responsibility of 4 -6 children ...leaving Annie with 6 kids and using MORELAND for all of them, to avoid questions from anyone......

Hugh is buried as Hugh Campbell Moreland, and I have his record and headstone picture ....can't find James in Canada yet !!!!although know he is here somewhere..

ANY opinions????on the John and Annie marriage date???

Wendy. Is Annie Paterson Anderson the same lass that married William Alexander Moreland in 1888?

Hi Wendy

On the 1891 census there is a family by the name of Moreland with head of the house being William Moreland but the wife is listed as Agnes and born in Kirkcudbright. There are a few children and there is one called James but he was only a baby. Could this be your Annie? I searched and searched for a marriage for the dates you gave to a John Campbell but, sorry  came up with nothing. Please let us know how you progress

Good Luck

Dennis..yes this is Annie Paterson Anderson that married William Alexander Moreland 28 Feb 1888 St. Mary's Church,Partick Lanark, Scotland

Annie and William went to Australia had the following children:
William Alexander 06 Aug 1888 Charters Towers,Qeeensland, Australia
Agnes 21 Apr 1890 Charters Towers,Qeeensland, Australia
Isaac 17 Apr 1892 Charters Towers,Qeeensland, Australia
Annie 12 Nov 1895 Charters Towers,Qeeensland, Australia

William Alexander Sr. Died November 30 1895...
Annie went back to Scotland...and she was with John Campbell in the 1901 census for Cathcart...with her listed as Wife to Head of Household John Campbell...and William, Isaac and Annie are listed as step children..Agnes was missing from the census ..have no idea where she was...

Finally got Hugh's birth record and thats' the first post of this thread...

I have William and Agnes' in my tree ...ALOT ..but cannot figure out who that would have been ..what area would that have been from ? As far as I have there wouldn't have been a William that was still alive...or one that was old enough to have been married at that time....but who knows..this family has been a challenge to figure out.

Thanks for looking for me..I couldn't find any record either and wondered if anyone might agree OR disagree with my thoughts on the matter...as the marriage record doesn't seem to exist....I guess looking for more info on John Campbell would be in order to see if I can find his parents and get a death cert....

Thanks again
Wendy

Hi again Wendy

The census was 1891 for Blantyre, Lanark with William Moreland (born Ireland) as head and Agnes as wife. He was aged 36 and she was 34. Children listed are Mary (13), William (9), Ellen (7), Agnes (5) and James (1). William's occupation was that of Stone Miner. From your last post this wouldn't appear to be the Annie you are looking for but, as you say, they might fit in somewhere.

Happy Hunting

Hi Wendy
A bit of trivia about Charters Towers Queensland (I have a sister living there and have visited several times).
Your William Moreland may have emigrated to try his hand at Gold mining. Charters Towers had several rich mines in the late 1800's, sadly all now closed.
It's a lovely town with a wealth of old heritage buildings between Townsville on the coast and Mount Isa, which is another, still working, mine.

Will see if they somehow fit into my tree ...you never know.Always good to have information ...you never know when it might just work out.

I have seen several pictures from the area...and have learned that it was quite the hub of activity when the mines were all open...Somewhere, I read that if Charters Towers didn't have what you were looking for..it wasn't made...

William Alexander was listed as a miner (on the birth certificate I have for my Grandfather Isaac), and also William's death certificate....cause of death was Cancer of the stomach, Dropsy and Anaemia, Exhaustion...They lived in Charters Towers for 8 years before his death, (at the age of 43), and certainly sounds like he was a hard working man.

Since Australia doesn't keep the census records, have never been able to find out where they lived, which I am told most of the homes are still standing...and would love to have be able to get a picture of the area, and they're home.....I have also tried to find out what mine(s) he worked in...but have only been able to compile a list of the running mines that were open and running , when he and Annie were living there...

I am still amazed by the amount of relocating some of our ancestors did...when I find it difficult to get out of the city most of the time.... I have been trying to find out if they had directories that might give an address of they're whereabouts...but haven't been successful as YET....
will keep trying

Now to try and find more details of Annie and John Campbell.......I know that Annie came to Canada (1913 approx.) with James ..Hugh...Annie...Isaac and MAYBE Agnes...William Jr. was married by this time... so need to come up with something that will give me John's parents ..or any written reference to Annie..so I can figure out what happened..

Again many thanks ladies for your responses.
