Hi all:

Trying to find death record of James Campbell on SP, I know by the UK minig website he died 23 July 1859, in Govan. I did a search by campbell, James, 1859, and Lanark as filters, No Govan records....hmmm ](*,) any suggestions??

Thanks

Hi Karen:

Does it say where he died? My grandfather lived in Govan, but the day he died, he was working in Cathcart so his death was registered there.

You could try to narrow down the 33 deaths of men named James Campbell who died in 1859, by putting in his age or birth year +/- a couple of years or by including his mother's maiden name AND leaving out a place.

Hi Karen

Did you assume that the Registrar wrote his name as Campbell or did you wildcard it as Cam*bel*. :?:

I almost blew 30 credits by forgetting the second asterisk. He was registered as Campbel - his wife was Cambell

We forget, or become complacent with familiar names. Everyone knows how to spell a guid Scots name like Campbell. :!: Not around 1860 they didn't :?

Bingo! Russell,
That's why I had difficulty in finding the Dalziel's on S.P. I located them on Ancestry but no matter what permutations and wildcards I put in I couldn't find the names - except one. This was because most of them looked as though they had a double L at the end and I hadn't put an asterisk at the end. I wasted a few credits but got there in the end so I'm not grumbling!
You learn something new every day on T.S - and it's all to the good where the credit card is concerned!
Thanks.

Karen,

If you tick to show unrecorded ages, put the year 1859 and his age as 30 and the lanark area you'll get 9 hits.

There none in Govan put there are one's close by.

Hang onto any information you paid for.

More than once I've downloaded a document only to be disappointed by unfamiliar parents, and then months later, when reviewing 'wasted credit' documents, found that the parents names are no longer unfamiliar.

Thanks to the naming conventions, when you search on a persons name, some of your hits are likely to be cousins.

Thanks, Heymarky,
It's true what you say. Sometimes when going over old notes I discover names that fit although I didn't think they would at the time of recording. That reminds me it is long overdue for another trawl through the notes!
