Hello Vivienne,
A warm welcome to Talking Scot
From your question, you are probably already aware that birth records after 1906 aren't available online.
You will have to apply to GROS (General Records Office of Scotland) for this. This link is to their page which gives details on how to apply
http://www.gro-scotland.gov.uk/famrec/bdm.html
However, I'm not sure how much they will be able to do with only a name and two possible years. Still, it wouldn't do any harm to contact them.

A cat leaves pawprints on your heart
McDonald or MacDonald (some couldn't make up their mind!), Bonner, Crichton, McKillop, Campbell, Cameron, Gitrig (+other spellings), Clark, Sloan, Stewart, McCutcheon, Ireland (the surname)

It all depends on whether we're talking a John SMITH or an Ezekiel McHoughmagandy FERRETWARBLER !emanday wrote:......snipped.............

Seriously, if there is a middle name, there's a good chance of success, even with SMITH; if there isn't a middle name it's all down to how commonly occurring the given and surnames are.
