In the 1891 census for BridgeEnd Old Farm in Greenock, 564/01 048/01 15, the 22 year old James B(ain) ELSTOB's place of birth is shown as "Renfrewshire, Greenock", but that's not to say that his father or previous generations didn't come from England !!Jean Jeanie wrote:

I'm sure I read you had found them in 1891 but can't find it now. If you did find them what were the birthplaces?
Jean
His wife Agnes ELSTOB [known to be MS COWAN], is shown as born in Glasgow.
His 1950 death register entry, aged 82, shows his father as John ELSTOB, Deputy Harbour Master.

The thing that stumped me is not only is a birth missing for Angus...but a brother named Hugh too. There is the birth of wee James in 1891 and then they lost wee Robert in 1909 all in Greenock....and are there for the 1891 census...but not found in 1901 and then both James Sr and Agnes are still right there when they die. Odd very odd. I've tried every wildcard I could deal myself but I don't think the SP indexes are going to give them up. The marriage for James and Agnes is right where James's BC states it is.
Best wishes

Hi Ellen
Jumped the gun and didn't read all your post!!! Was going to tell you about wee John Figgins Elstob but now see you've found him.....as for the dual Margarets....well....it does happen. Perhaps an insurance policy in case one of them died. I always find that theory a bit morbid though.....
Best wishes
