Looking for any information on McMurray's from Glasgow /Galloway area. More specifically - Gavin McMurray (scotland) who married Jennie Morrison (Ireland). They had the following children: Thomas, James, John, Margaret, Gavin, Agnes and William Alexander (my g-grandfather)born 1832 in Glasgow and emigrated to Canada.

Welcome to Talking Scot!

If you tell us what information you already have for your McMurray family, we may be able to help. For example, have you found them in any census records? Do you have the records of Gavin and Jennie's marriage and their children's births? All of the above may be available on a pay-per-view access on Scotland's People (link at the top of this page). Do you know the year that your great grandfather left for Canada? Did other family members leave also, or might they still be found in later Scottish censuses?

Hi Sarah!
Unfortunately - that is about all the info I have on Gavin and Jennie. I know William married approx. 1864 - Martha Hurley (Huxley?)and had his first child in 1865. So - assume he emigrated to Canada circa 1850-1860's.
I have searched on the 'free' sites available to me for information before 1881 for Gavin, Jenny and William, but with no success. I've been hoping someone may have access to the 1841 Scotland Census's but I'm not aware of the Parish or town they lived in. I'm also not sure who else emigrated with him.
I have found William in the Canadian 1881 Census - and his sibling information was in the family bible (which has since burnt). A letter from my g-grandfather lists Gavin and Jenny as his parents but he did not know their ages.
We are visiting Glasgow next month and would love to stand where they once lived if at all possible.

I had a look at the 1841 census on a couple of different sites, but didn't have any luck. Hopefully someone who's better at searching will come up with something!

ScotlandsPeople has birth record for a Gaven (note spelling) McMurray in 1802. Seems about the right age and might be worth a look. I am also researching McMurrays but can't see any connection with the info you supplied.

Oh - this is exciting. I'm trying now to access the Scotlands People site - and have paid for my credits to view but for some reason, I still can't access it. I've sent the information to them and hope to have this resolved asap.
If anyone has access/can forward a copy - that would be great too.

Hi Sheila,
That's good news! Normally, Scotlands People is very good about getting back to you quickly if there is a problem. Of course, it's the middle of the night there now

But I'm sure it will be resolved tomorrow.

If you need any help with searching, using wildcards, etc. just post on the forum and more experienced users will be happy to advise you. After you get your first certificate, you'll have more people to hunt for (I hope you know that genealogy is habit-forming!

Here is what I've found from SP -- Hugh Gaven Park McMurray - born/baptized Dec. 10/19th, 1802 at Loveston (?) (Lorieston/Lorieslon/Loveslon???) son of Alexander and Janet Powe -- Dailly Parish, Ayr.

I've tried to take this search further for Hugh - with little success with names not matching. No other Gaven's turned up - and quite a few Janet Pow's (no 'e') making it difficult to figure which Janet it may be.

I tried the 1841 census search as well - to no avail!
I hope someone is able to shed a little more light on Gaven/ William/Jenny.....
I will continue to search and search and search - lol

I had a look on the BVRI for Alexander and Janets wains and got the following. Take note of the spelling variation on Janets surname, and also some interesting middle names given to their wains. I tried to find any wains for Gavin and Jennie but came up nought.

There is a Janet Pow born in 1772 in Dailly Ayrshire but no mother's name for the majority. There is however a Jean Walker who had a wain with Robert Pow in 1791 in Girvan, Ayrshire which also links in with where Janet had two of her wains. The said Robert Pow has seven wains listed doing a parent search the majority born in Dailly Ayrshire.

Wow - I'm amazed at how much everyone has helped me on my first day on this site!

What does BVRI stand for?? So much to learn I see!
It took me a little bit to figure out what 'wains' meant - but....eventually this little brain figured it out - haha
I see I have some homework to research now -- and can't wait to keep searching. It certainly has become an addiction.

Now - off to research Gaven -- Gavin/Jenny/Jannet..William.....
